Why Indigo
You might already know that the indigo plant has been used globally for thousands of years as a textile dye, beloved for its gorgeous blue-purple hue - in fact traces of indigo flowers have been found in tombs everywhere from China to Egypt to Peru. But did you know that the indigo plant has also been cherished as a medicinal herb? In Chinese herbal medicine, indigo aka Qing Dai can help clear heat and remove toxicity from the blood and was traditionally used for febrile diseases. It was often called a life saving medicinal plant!
Indigo also happens to be my oldest daughter’s middle name! When we found out I was pregnant, the pregnancy app said she was the size of a blueberry, and that became her nickname through my entire pregnancy, even when she was much, much larger than a blueberry. When she was born, we wanted to give a nod to that name and chose indigo to represent all the things we love - my husband as an artist, and me as an herbal student, and her gorgeous blue eyes.
Indigo is also the color of the third eye chakra, which governs intuition, a trait that I rely heavily on in my practice! When I switched my practice name from Fairfield Family Acupuncture to Indigo a few years ago, everything else started to fall into place. Amazing what a name (and color) can do!
