Just Breathe
Friendly little reminder to BREATHE! If life’s been feeling a little intense, chaotic, uncertain or overwhelming, let me assure you: you are NOT alone!
It seems to be a universal theme lately (or at least for loads of people in my life) and it has lots of us bracing for whatever is coming next.
One of the things we do when we are bracing is hold out breath! I definitely notice that I do this when I’m stressed, and there are some fascinating biological reasons that we do this, but it really only makes things worse! So when you’re feeling overwhelmed, focus on your breathing. If you notice you’re holding your breath or taking short shallow breaths (another physiological stress response), start mindful breathing! Try to make your exhales last as long or longer than your inhales, which tells your nervous system that you’re safe. 💫
And here is a simple meditation and breathing exercise for you that you can stop and do any time!
QUICKIE MEDITATION:
* Wherever you are, sitting or standing, get comfortable and take a few deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. If you are sitting,
* close your eyes.
* On the next inhalation, to the count of 4, say to yourself “I am”.
* On the exhale to the count of 6 say to yourself, “at peace.”
* Repeat this cycle of inhalations and exhalations 3-4 times.

The key here is repeating the mantra, and making sure the exhale is longer than the inhale, which is how we normally breathe at rest. This signals to the body that you are not in danger and helps to soothe anxiety. 💙💕
